Hat measures 21" circumference.
 
STITCH NATION by Debbie Stoller™ “Washable Ewe™”:1 ball each 3012 Licorice A, 3903 Strawberry B, 3706 Zinnia C, and 3101 Cottontail D.
 
Knitting Needles: 4.5 [US 7] and 5mm [US 8].
Stitch holders (2), place markers (optional), yarn needle.
 
GAUGE: 20 sts = 4"; 24 rows = 4" in St st. CHECK YOUR GAUGE. Use any size needle to obtain the gauge.
 
Special Stitches
M1 = Make 1 (Inc) – Lift strand between needles to left-hand needle and work strand through the back loop, twisting it to prevent a hole, [knit or purl as indicated by pattern st].
 
NOTES
1. Hat is worked in rows, from earflaps up to top of Hat. Then back seam is sewn.
2. Color patterns are worked following charts.
3. Charts are worked in St st (knit on Right Side, purl on Wrong Side). Read charts from right to left on Right Side rows, and left to right on Wrong Side rows. Carry color not in use across Wrong Side.
4. Stitch markers can be used, if desired, to separate repeats of each color pattern.
 
HAT
Earflaps (make 2)
With larger needles and A, cast on 5 sts.
Begin Earflap Chart
Beginning with a Wrong Side (purl) row, work in St st following Row 1 of Earflap Chart.
Continue in St st and Earflap Chart, inc 1 st (M1) at beginning and end of next row, then every other row 6 times—19 sts. Place sts on stitch holder.
 

 
Main Hat
Next Row (Right Side): With larger needles and D, cast on 13 sts, with Right Side facing knit across 19 sts of first earflap, cast on 36 sts, knit across 19 sts of second earflap, cast on 13 sts—100 sts.
Next Row:  With D, purl.
Chart 1
Row 1 (Right Side): With D, k1, *work Row 1 of Chart 1; repeat from * across to last st, with D, k1.
Keeping first and last sts as selvedge, continue in St st and Chart 1 as established, until all 5 rows of Chart 1 are complete.
 

 
Next Row: With D, purl across and inc 1 st—101 sts.
Chart 2
Row 1 (Right Side): With B,K1, *work Row 1 of Chart 2; repeat from * across to last st, with B, k1.
Keeping first and last sts as selvedge, continue in St st and Chart 2 as established, until all 4 rows of Chart 2 are complete.
 

 
Next Row: With A, knit.
Next Row: With A, purl across and inc 1 st—102 sts.
Chart 3
Row 1 (Right Side): With A, k1, *work Row 1 of Chart 3, with A, k6; repeat from * across to last st, with A, k1.
Keeping first and last sts as selvedge, continue in St st and Chart 3 as established, until all 17 rows of Chart 3 are complete.

 
Next Row: With A, purl.
Shape Crown
Next Row (Right Side): With A, K5, k2tog, [k8, k2tog] 9 times, k5—92 sts.
Next Row: With C, purl.
Next Row: With A, k4, k2tog, [k7, k2tog] 9 times, k5—82 sts.
Next Row: With D, purl.
Next Row: With B, k3, k2tog, [k6, k2tog] 9 times, k5—72 sts.
Next Row: With B, purl.
Next Row: With C, k2, k2tog, [k5, k2tog] 9 times, k5—62 sts.
Next Row: With D, purl.
Next Row: With B, K1, k2tog, [k4, k2tog] 9 times, k5—52 sts.
Change to A, and work with A only to end.
Next Row: Purl.
Next Row: K2tog, [k3, k2tog] 9 times, k5—42 sts.
Next Row: Purl.
Next Row: K3, k2tog, [k2, k2tog] 8 times, k5—33 sts.
Next Row: Purl.
Next Row: K1, *k2tog; repeat from * to end of row—17 sts.
Next Row: Purl.
Next Row: K1, *k2tog; repeat from * to end of row—9 sts.
Next Row: Purl.
Cut yarn leaving long tail. Thread tail through remaining sts and pull tight to secure.
 
FINISHING
Weave in ends.
 
Edging
With smaller needles, pickup and knit sts evenly spaced around lower edge of hat, including earflaps. Work in Garter st for 2 rows. Bind off loosely. Sew back seam.
 
Braids
For each earflap, cut five 28" strands each of A, C and D –15 strands total. Pull strands halfway through lower edge of earflap, fold and gather into 3 sections. Braid, tie off and trim.
Repeat for top hat braid, cutting strands 18" long.
